WEIPKE VAN DER LAGEWEG: "My flag is KWPN"

The breeding stud founded by Wiepke van de Lageweg at Beers, near Leeuwarden in the north of the Netherlands, is today one of the major studs contributing to the KWPN stud-book. As the owner of twenty stallions (that is to say 10% of the sires of this stud-book) Wiepke van de Lageweg adds up a total of more than 1500 mare coverings every year!

Some of his stallions are already among the best ones in the rankings based upon the performances of their offspring, which were published at the beginning of the year by the KWPN stud-book. Wiepke van de Lageweg coined his name mainly thanks to Nimmerdor, the famous leading sire of Dutch breeding. In his efforts to perpetuate this male lineage, he is also the owner of Wellington, Ahorn, Emilion and Glennridge, among other stallions.

... Q In the Netherlands, a stallion may cover a large number of mares, putting at risk the value of so many foals by this one stallion. In other countries, such as France, the number of mares covered by one stallion is limited. Which way do you think is best?

I am against the establishment of a limited number of mares. A good sire needs many mares. The bad sires do not need any. In addition to that, I donÕt think it is fair to the breeder whose mare cannot be covered just because the quota is reached.

Q What view have you got of the future of European sport horse breeding?

For me nothing has changed. I have always picked my horses from all countries. ...
